Turbulence is the instability generated by shear. Stronger the shear, stronger the turbulence. Lot of factors can give rise to turbulence in a flow.

Laminar flow to Transition (Chaotic flow) to Turbulent flow
Transition from laminar to turbulent flow typically occurs at the local transition Reynolds number, which varies for different types of flows.
Understanding Turbulent Flows
“Turbulence is the most important unsolved problem of classical physics.” – Richard Feynman
What is Turbulent Flow?
Turbulent flow is a complex fluid motion characterized by chaotic, irregular fluctuations in velocity, pressure, and other properties. Unlike laminar flow where fluid particles move in smooth, parallel layers, turbulent flow exhibits mixing, swirling, and unpredictable motion patterns that make it one of the most fascinating yet challenging phenomena in fluid mechanics.

The Moody chart, also known as the Moody diagram, is a graphical tool used in fluid mechanics to determine the Darcy-Weisbach friction factor for a pipe with a known relative roughness and Reynolds number

Mathematical Description
Turbulent flows are governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, but their nonlinear nature makes analytical solutions extremely difficult. The most common approaches include:
∂u/∂t + u·∇u = -∇p/ρ + ν∇²u + f
Navier-Stokes Equation (simplified form)
Reynolds Decomposition
Any turbulent quantity can be decomposed into mean and fluctuating components:
u = ū + u’
where ū is the time-averaged mean and u’ is the fluctuating component.
Turbulent Energy Cascade
One of the most important concepts in turbulence is the energy cascade. Energy is transferred from large-scale motions to progressively smaller scales until it’s dissipated as heat at the molecular level.
Kolmogorov’s Theory (1941)
Inertial Subrange: Energy cascade follows the famous -5/3 power law
Energy Spectrum: E(k) ∝ k^(-5/3)
This theory describes how energy is distributed across different length scales in turbulent flow.

Computational Approaches
Due to the complexity of turbulent flows, various computational methods have been developed:
